Spanish Painting from El Greco to Picasso: Time, Truth, and History

This special exhibiton talk focuses on key Spanish artists' distinctive interpretations of history, religion, mythology, and everyday life.

Members' Party and Private Viewing

We welcome all members to attend a party and private viewing of Spanish Painting from El Greco to Picasso: Time, Truth, and History, a large-scale exhibition focusing on key Spanish artists of the last five centuries, as well as Lucio Fontana: Venice/New York, the first major exhibition devoted to the artist in the United States since the Guggenheim's retrospective in 1977. We will have guided tours led by our wonderful gallery educators followed by live music and a cash bar. Spanish Painting from El Greco to Picasso: Time, Truth, and History Opening Reception

Celebrate the opening of the Guggenheim Museum's ambitious exhibition Spanish Painting from El Greco to Picasso: Time, Truth, and History. The exhibition features 135 paintings from the sixteenth to mid-twentieth century, including artists such as El Greco, Diego Velázquez, Francisco Goya, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, and Salvador Dalí.

Picasso scholar, curator of The Frick Collection, and author of Picasso's Variations on the Masters: Confrontations with the Past Susan Grace Galassi examines Picasso's intensely original interpretations of traditional motifs from the history of Spanish painting.

Beyond Flamenco—Finding Spain in Music
This two-concert series explores how Spain's vibrant music and painting reflect a broad range of European influences. Presented in conjunction with Spanish Painting from El Greco to Picasso: Time, Truth, and History.

Iberia

Leading Spanish piano virtuoso Pedro Carboné performs selections of Isaac Albéniz’s Iberia, providing a rare opportunity to experience the pinnacle of Spanish keyboard music. Preeminent Spanish novelist Antonio Muñoz Molina discusses the work.

Finding Spain in Music

Spain reveals itself as a country with a vibrantly rich musical tradition. Angel Gil-Ordóñez conducts the Perspectives Ensemble in Manuel de Falla's Piano Concerto and the Collegiate Chorale in selections by Tomás Luis de Victoria. Pianist Pedro Carboné plays music by Antonio Soler. Music historian Joseph Horowitz and novelist Antonio Muñoz Molina discuss the work.

Presented in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes in New York.

Fall Family Day
SUN DEC 3, 1–4 PM

Bring the family for an afternoon filled with Spanish art and culture. Create your own artwork inspired by the exhibition Spanish Painting from El Greco to Picasso: Time, Truth, and History. Enjoy live Spanish dancing and music featuring Danzas Espanolãs, join our Storytime for Families, and explore the museum's landmark building.

This program is designed for families with children ages 5–12. No reservation necessary. Tickets are unlimited and will be available at the admissions desk on the day of the program. $15 per family ($10 for members, FREE for Family Members).
