Of the important
contemporary media artists, Fabrizio Plessi
knows like no other how to hover between
semblance and reality. The avant-garde of
Modern art claimed that art and life - and thus
simulation and being - were identical. They
believed that the progress of art consisted in
art's trespassing into life. For Plessi, no: he
drives fiction into reality in order to stop
almost immediately in the act of overturning
the real; he fixes the fiction while it is
still a semblance, and brings it into dramatic
contact with reality. This balance between
believe-it's-the-truth and the truth of
reality, this strained relation between
semblance and being, consititutes the terrain
in which poetry, as well as fiction, are
born.

Artwork after artwork. Years
and years of work.
But what, ultimately,
is the aim of all this work?
To modify and invert
the lapidary and static order of things.
This is my work.
To alter the rational perspective scheme of
our perception.
This is my work.
To overturn the very meaning of the work and
extend its potential beyond circumscribed
confines.
This is my work.
To run across unkown terrain using as yet
unproven strategies.
This is my work.
To enter and exit endlessly, to and from the
confines of preconstituted logic.
This is my work.
To cross diagonally, without any complexes of
orthodoxy, the separation and discomfort of
creativity.
This, and only this, is my work.
