The Arts in the Aztec Empire

Reinterpreting the History of Mexican Art

Ndabua Isien/Nest of Images:
Contemporary Indigenous Mexican Poetry

This evening provides an opportunity to share the work of indigenous poets from Mexico. Readings by Mayan, Zapotec, and Mazatec poets will be translated and read in Spanish and in English. Participants: Briceida Cuevas Cob, Juan Gregorio Regino, and Natalia Toledo. Moderated by Mónica de la Torre with Eliot Weinberger.

Cabaret Prehispánico: Performance by Jesusa Rodríguez

RodrĖguez presents a satirical "Precolumbian cabaret" in which she narrates the story of the Aztec empire, with musical accompaniment by Liliana Felipe.

From Aztec to High Tech:
A Solo Performance by Guillermo Gómez-Peña

Guillermo Gómez-Peña uses multilingualism, humor, and hybrid literary genres as subversive strategies to explore the fear of immigration, the dark side of globalization, the digital divide, censorship, and interracial sexuality.

DĖa de los Muertos: A Family Celebration
SAT OCT 30, 11:30 AM–5:30 PM
At El Museo, families learn about the feast of the Day of the Dead. Then take the shuttle to the Guggenheim Museum for educator-led tours of the exhibition The Aztec Empire and Cinekids, a screening of films made for children. Free with ticket obtained at El Museo del Barrio. This bilingual program includes free admission to both museums and shuttle transportation. For more information, call (212) 660-7134.

FAMILY WORKSHOPS

Codices of the Aztecs
SAT NOV 13, 1–4 PM
Participants create codices of their own using natural inks and paints to record important stories about their life on genuine bark paper. Instructor: Patricia Miranda

Aztec Animals and Animation

Families investigate the exhibition, create clay animals, and take digital photos of their creations, used to make an animated iMovie. Instructors: Jessica Wright, Rosanna Flouty, and Reynolds Tenazas-Norman

Betsabeé Romero: Printmaking Workshop
SUN DEC 12, 1–4 PM
Betsabeé Romero works with design motifs from The Aztec Empire to conduct a printmaking workshop using the car tire as a sculptural medium. Instructor: Betsabeé Romero

AZTEC FAMILY DAYS
SUNS NOV 14, DEC 12, JAN 9, and FEB 13 @ 1 and 2 PM
Free family highlights tours of The Aztec Empire. Children with adult companions are welcome to explore the exhibition and to participate in gallery activities. Reduced admission on Aztec Family Days is $18 for families with children under 18 and up to two adults.

For Students
Art After School at the Guggenheim
TUES OCT 19–DEC 7, 4–6:15 PM
Children participate in interactive gallery visits followed by hands-on studio-art workshops. The program culminates with a showcase where students invite their families to view the work they have created. To ensure individual attention, this program is limited to 15 participants. EDUCATORS' WORKSHOPS
The Arts and Culture of Mexico: A Two-Part Workshop for Teachers
Through this collaboration between El Museo del Barrio and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, educators are invited to learn about the ancient culture and traditions of Mexico.

Part 1: Día de los Muertos/Day of the Dead Workshop
SAT OCT 2, 1–3 PM
Join artists, educators, and folklorists to learn about the history and traditions of the Day of the Dead feasts held annually on November 1 and 2. Location: El Museo del Barrio, 1230 Fifth Avenue at 104th St. $20; $15 if attending both workshops. To register, call (212) 660-7134.

Part 2: The Aztec Empire: Materials and Methods for the Classroom
